Tributes to Admiral Shushil Kumar
My tributes and salutes to Admiral Shushil Kumar Isaac on his first death anniversary
I have attended a few of his lectures on India's defence policy vis-a-vis the role of Indian Navy, Indian Navy's blue water policy, economy behind the development of Indian Shipping industry, his personal experiences, particularly as Captain of INS Delhi-which is the first indigenous high profile destroyer constructed by Mazgaon Dock Ltd. and which was commissioned on 15 nov. 1997 etc., as a member of Institute of Defence Studies and Anlyses (Now renamed as Manohar Parrikar Institute of Defence Studies and analyses)
I became his fan after hearing his lectures.
It is but natural, that 90 percent of his audience constituted of Defence and Naval personnel. Only a very few civilians like me used to be present. But during the Question and Answer session, after each lecture, he always used to encourage the civilian audience to ask questions. He used to say, " My colleagues will always cheer and clap and support my view points. But it is the civilian audience who is able to judge my views impartially and we are in the forces for the civilians. Hence they have every right to to question us. "
He was a specialist in hydrography and amphibious warfare and was also a qualified air warfare instructor. He was an alumnus of the National Defence College and was an instructor at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. His training abroad included a deputation to the Royal Navy on board HMS Dampier in 1963 and a course in amphibious warfare with the US Navy at Coronado, California, in 1976.
During his tenure as CNS, He was the highest-decorated serving officer in the Indian Navy, and he retired on 29 December 2001. He was a keen yachtsman and played polo on the international circuit, for which he had an international rating of 4+ goals.
But apart from all these he was a great thinker and strategist. My only regret is he has not written a book. May be in future his lectures will be compiled and will be published as a book.
ॐ शान्ति शान्ति
